A low purchase price can disappear quickly when a used scissor lift table, chain block or lifting attachment arrives with missing paperwork, damaged hydraulics or an unclear safe working load. Use this used lifting equipment inspection checklist before agreeing a purchase, collecting equipment or putting it into service. It helps maintenance teams and buyers separate a workable used asset from one that will create downtime, repair cost or a safety problem.
A visual check alone is not enough. Used lifting equipment should be assessed against its intended job, its available records and the standard required for safe use on your site. If the equipment is subject to LOLER, a current Thorough Examination report may be required before use. A seller's statement that an item is "fully working" is not a substitute for documentation or a competent inspection.
Start with the intended use and rated capacity
First establish exactly what the equipment will lift, where it will operate and how often it will be used. A lift table used occasionally to position boxed components in a clean workshop faces very different demands from one handling palletised loads through a busy warehouse shift.
Check the safe working load, often marked SWL or WLL, against the heaviest load you expect to handle. Allow for the weight of forks, lifting beams, slings, jibs or other accessories where relevant. Capacity markings must be legible and appropriate to the equipment as configured. If a rating plate is missing, damaged or inconsistent with the seller's description, treat that as a stop point until the manufacturer or a competent person can confirm the specification.
Load position matters as much as total weight. A scissor lift table can be within its rated capacity but still be unsuitable for an overhanging or unevenly distributed load. Likewise, a forklift attachment must be compatible with the lorry and may affect its residual capacity. Do not assume that two items which physically fit together are approved to work together.
Used lifting equipment inspection checklist: records first
Ask for the equipment's identification details before travelling to view it. The make, model, serial number, year of manufacture and original declaration or manual make it far easier to verify parts availability, rated capacity and service requirements.
For equipment within the scope of LOLER, request the latest Thorough Examination report and read the findings rather than simply checking that a certificate exists. Look for outstanding defects, restrictions on use, recommendations, the examination date and the next due date. The required frequency depends on the equipment and how it is used. For example, lifting accessories commonly need Thorough Examination at shorter intervals than general lifting equipment, while schemes of examination can set different arrangements.
Service records are also valuable, particularly on powered equipment. They show whether wear items, hydraulic hoses, chains, bearings, batteries, chargers or control components have been maintained rather than patched over. A short record history does not automatically rule out a purchase, but it should affect price, planned maintenance and the level of inspection needed before commissioning.
Check that records relate to the exact item for sale. Serial number mismatches, generic certificates and reports that refer only to a batch of equipment need resolving before purchase.
Inspect the structure closely
Clean paint can make old damage less obvious. Inspect in good light and, where safe, look underneath the equipment as well as at the areas visible from standing height. Pay particular attention to load-bearing parts, pivot points, welds, fasteners and mounting interfaces.
Use the following physical checks as a practical starting point:
- Check frames, platforms, arms, masts, forks, lifting eyes and beams for cracks, distortion, corrosion, unauthorised weld repairs and bent sections.
- Inspect pins, bushes, rollers, bearings and pivots for excessive play, seized movement or uneven wear.
- Confirm that bolts, retaining clips, locking pins and safety catches are present, correctly fitted and not visibly damaged.
- Examine chains, wire ropes, hooks, slings and lifting points for wear, stretch, corrosion, broken strands, sharp edges or damaged safety latches.
- Look for hydraulic oil leaks at rams, hoses, fittings, pumps and valves, as well as scoring or corrosion on ram rods.
- Check guards, toe protection, limit switches, emergency stops and mechanical safety props where fitted.
Test operation, but only under controlled conditions
A static inspection cannot show every fault. If possible, see the equipment operate through its full normal travel with a suitable load and an experienced operator. Do not arrange an improvised overload test during a viewing. Formal testing and examination should be carried out under controlled conditions by competent people.
During an operational check, listen for unusual knocking, chain noise, pump cavitation or motor strain. Movement should be controlled and reasonably smooth, without sudden drops, drifting, jerking or hesitation. A lift table that lowers slowly when left raised, or a chain block that will not hold position, should not be accepted for service until the cause has been identified and repaired.
For powered items, inspect cables, plugs, pendant controls, batteries and chargers. Check that charging arrangements suit your premises and that battery condition has been assessed realistically. An older electric pallet truck or lift table may appear economical until battery replacement, charger repair and control faults are included in the cost.
Test all controls, emergency stops and interlocks where it is safe to do so. Safety devices should not be bypassed to demonstrate operation. If a seller says a limit switch is only disconnected temporarily, assume the repair is part of the purchase decision and cost it accordingly.
Check accessories and compatibility
Used lifting equipment is often sold with loose accessories, but each accessory needs its own assessment. Slings, shackles, hooks, lifting chains, spreader beams and clamps should have legible identification and an appropriate rating. They should also have current examination records where required.
Avoid buying a bundle on the basis that it is "all included". Confirm which accessories are included, their individual capacities and whether they are suitable for the planned lifting arrangement. A lifting beam without the correct end fittings, or forks with unknown capacity, may have limited practical value.
For equipment that will be installed or attached to existing machinery, measure before buying. Check platform dimensions, lowered and raised height, overall footprint, fork section, carriage class, mounting centres, power supply and floor loading. Site constraints can turn an otherwise sound machine into an unusable purchase.
Build repair cost into the decision
Used equipment can be a sound commercial choice when its condition is known and parts remain available. The key is to price the whole job, not just the item on the seller's invoice. Include transport, unloading, inspection, Thorough Examination if needed, replacement parts, consumables, installation and operator familiarisation.
Some defects are straightforward. Replacing worn wheels, a control pendant, fasteners or a hydraulic hose may be sensible if the structure and core mechanism are sound. Structural damage, obsolete control systems, missing capacity information or unavailable critical parts are more serious. In those cases, the apparent saving can be false economy.
Where there is any doubt, arrange an inspection by a competent person before purchase or make acceptance conditional on a satisfactory assessment. This is particularly worthwhile for high-capacity lift tables, overhead lifting equipment, used forklift attachments and equipment with an unclear history.
Prepare the equipment before it enters service
Once purchased, quarantine the item until your checks, records and any repairs are complete. Add it to the site's equipment register, retain its reports and manuals, and make sure the operator understands the rated capacity, controls and limitations. Pre-use checks should be proportionate to the equipment, but they must be routine rather than an afterthought.
A good used purchase is not the item with the lowest asking price. It is the one with a verified capacity, a defensible condition record, available parts and a clear route to safe use. Checking those points before money changes hands gives your team a far better chance of putting the equipment straight to productive work.
